Portraits Of Pride
In 1995 I took a photography class at the International Center of Photography that led to the creation of this book. My class was given the assignment of “putting yourself in an unfamiliar or uncomfortable situation and photograph your way out of it”. Gay Pride was scheduled for the following weekend. I had never been to this parade because I am uneasy around crowds.
Through my camera lens, I ignored the crowd and was able to connect with the participants personally.
From the moment I began shooting the parade I was awestruck by the exuberance of the participants and I have not missed a parade since that assignment.
My hope is that one day in the future, a child can look at this book and ask his/her parents if it was really true that gay people couldn’t marry in the year 2000, just as I incredulously questioned my parents about black people having to sit at the back of the bus.
The photos within this book represent 8 years of the NYC Gay Pride Marches spanning 1995 – 2002. I hope to have captured the spirit, pride, “campiness”, sexual expression and message from each one of my subjects, while also capturing an “intimate moment” between the subject and myself.
